So unfortunately, the vote ended in a tie so executive decision: we’ll be reading Yellowface by R.F. Kuang and we’ll plan to discuss it in June or July!! Thank you Sonal for the idea!
This book is considered literary fiction but there is also a thriller aspect to it because you are constantly anxious to see if the narrator is going to get caught after stealing her dead frenemy’s manuscript. People have called it “un-put-down-able” so get excited!!!
Questions to think about:
how do you feel about the narrator? Do you hate her? Do you have any empathy for her? Are you supposed to?
How do you feel about Athena? Who is “allowed” to tell what kind of story?
Where’s the line between cultural appropriation and cultural celebration/exploration?
How just do you think cancel culture is? Was it an appropriate punishment?
