I find myself getting nervous before almost EVERY Zoom call!
Even in situations with close colleagues where there are practically no stakes… I will still find my heart beating rapidly, palms starting to sweat, and this extreme sense of worry that I’m going to look awful or say something stupid.
Even though I’m an introvert and prefer being by myself most of the time, I still rarely get nervous in person like I do with Zoom. There’s just got to be something inherently off about the visual component, because similar digital forms of communication like phone calls don’t seem to bother me either. The combination of eyeballs not connecting and having no real sense of who is looking at whom. It’s weird!!!
As someone who mostly works from home, it’s a very challenging obstacle, since it seems people want to hop on a Zoom call for almost everything these days! Anyway, it’s awesome that you found a way to calm yourself and connect with your professor and I’m going to try to slow down and pay attention to the details in my next Zoom call to see if I can spot something similar as a way to connect with other participants and chill out!

I guess it’s the vulnerability of being so exposed and seen by someone who is more present than in other interactions 🤷♀️
